Shakespeare in the Park
Theater Festival Poster

The Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival is a series of performances and workshops featuring the works of Shakespeare that happens in Los Angeles every summer. As a part of my Typography class, I designed a poster advertising the festival and the two plays being performed in the 2020 season: King Lear and As You Like It. After working on the original poster for class, I decided to try and make a series of posters all in the same style.
This project focused on styling a given set of phrases, and working with hand lettered or organic type. The poster was an exploration of styling typography on a large format canvas.

Initial Sketches and Experimentation
At the beginning of this project I created several possible layouts that explored both graphics and typographic arrangement.

I preferred the grunge look of the design with the skull, but it still needed a lot of work, so next I changed the typeface and the pink graphic elements to accentuate the grunge elements.

Final Design
I combined a block sans serif with a handwritten typeface to increase legibility and still pay homage to grunge.

Later Iterations
After finishing the project for class, I made two more posters in the same style for previous shows the Independent Shakespeare company has put on.
